You know what fancy folks have? Two ovens. And those cabinets that cover the whole kitchen so you can't find said appliances. Also large, expansive, Carrara marble countertops and separate kitchens for staff, but let's cut the list here and talk about what is attainable: a second oven in a useful setting.
enter the Breville Model Model #BOV900BSS
I saw this on @things.I.bought.and.liked's Insta and impulse bought it with ebates and a Macy's coupon/deal during the summer.* It claimed to replace multiple appliances: toaster oven, oven, dehydrator, and air fryer. It also has like 12 other settings (dough proofing, pizza, etc) but the basic premise is that it is supposed to be the Michael Phelps of countertop ovens: same tech, but does a lot of things really well.
Considerations:
a. This is may not be for you if you are an urban dweller. It takes up as much space as a microwave. Unless you're willing to forgo a fan above your stove and install this, but then you look poor and your house smells when you cook. Don't do that.
b. It does not dehydrate as well as I thought. By this, I mean I thought I could make banana chips at the same consistency as the ones I get in the bulk food section. That was false. They are chewy. Dehydration works by cooking forever at a very low temp. Which is also slightly stressful if you are leaving for the day.
c. Vampire appliance: they say it "turns off" if you aren't using but, just like three of my exes, they're lying. The LCD screen looks like the attached photos when "off".
d. It doesn't toast a single piece of bread as well as my former toaster oven used to. Yes, I have fiddled with settings. Yes, I did read the directions. No, it has not improved.
e. Customer service: Recent reviews on Williams and Sonoma were mixed, but Breville acts like the Lululemon of appliances: they never go on sale, and you can return anything for like 5 years. **
f. I have nothing to compare it to, but the airfryer is pretty bomb.
g. There are no coupons for more than 10%ish off, unless you know someone who works at W&S and they are willing to sacrifice their once-a-year-coupon. There were some differences in pricing though so take a quick gander (and use Ebates!) before buying.
Bottom line is that "John", as I call my Breville #BOV900BSS, is attractive, generally useful, but does not live up to all expectations as my "everything". If I were a bachelorette he would definitely be invited to the fantasy suite, but I would be embarrassed once I sobered up. His greatest strength is that he replaces like 6 things, and the respective landfill/environmental costs. Also I can't return him, so we'll likely continue on in an outwardly happy relationship where he is useful at the just the right time so I can't rationalize parting ways until one of us inevitably has a breakdown. So, well, here we are.
* Don't panic, Mom. I paid less than this. You taught me well.
** This is an exaggeration, but they basically send you a box if you need help and my understanding from reading all these internet forums is that they are very good at making you happy.
